Russia (18) v (6) Canada
By Fiona CrawfordCONSISTENT Homeless World Cup performers Russia consolidated their position at the top of Group F with a convincing 18-6 win over Canada today.
Morning showers cleared just in time for the match kick off in Federation Square, which saw Russia pile on nine goals to Canada's three in the first half.
Russia's very own James Bond, whose shirt bears the distinctive and crowd-pleasing 007, impressed the crowd early with two cracking goals. David Davtyan then slotted two goals in quick succession for Russia, barely giving the Canadians time to recover.
Canada fought hard to stay in the game, with Basile Pagonis solid up front. The Canadians strung together some good passes, used the wall, and finally crossed to Pagonis who finished strongly.
Canada's only female player, Krystal Bell, surprised the keeper with a lethal, left-footed shot to give the Canadians four goals. She made it a double right on full time when she took a rolling penalty after the Russians were penalised for having all three players in their defensive half.
But Russia was too strong. Russia has not finished lower than 13th in their previous Homeless World Cup outings and will comfortably move through to Section One of the Secondary Stage.
