Ireland (6) v (8) Ukraine
By Tiffany PilcherUKRAINE defeated a
spirited Ireland as day four of the 2008 Homeless World Cup got underway at Fed
Square Stadium.
Ireland put up a strong fight but lost the match 8-6.
Ukraine opened the game strongly, dominating possession and getting ahead with
three early goals, leaving Ireland to play catch-up.
The crowd support for Ireland was strong and they managed to net two goals
before half time. However, each time the Ukrainians were within shooting
distance they were unstoppable. Igor Flissak and Simiroz Maksym were
particularly strong for Ukraine.
In the second half Ireland launched a vigorous attack, working well together and
showing great agility. Captain Jimmy Bell was forceful in his assault on the
ball.
However, Ukraine continued to hold possession for the majority of the half,
using skill to force the Irish players around the court.
Ireland managed to get back in the game and within two goals, especially due to
the fantastic work of goalkeeper Thomas Cullen, who blocked shot after shot from
the Ukrainians.
But despite their exceptional effort they could not quite manage to overcome
the eastern European side’s precision.
