Afghanistan (8) v (6) Lithuania
By Fiona Crawford
Afghanistan overcame a determined Lithuania 8-6 at Federation Square today to win Group C, Section 1 and progress to the quarter finals.
Lithuania drew first blood with a Vytautas Skirmantas' impressive back-to-goal header that drew gasps and wolfwhistles from the crowd.
The unruffled Afghanistan equalised after a patient build up, adding another three goals before half time to put them 4-3 up.
Two quick goals from just inside the second half gave Afghanistan a three-goal lead before the Afghanistan keeper slid out of his area saving a shot and Lithuania capitalised on the penalty shot to make it 6-4.
Afghanistan scored another goal two goals and Lithuania one and, despite a determined Lithuanian attack, the match finished with Afghanistan in the lead, eight goals to six.
