Afghanistan (4) v (3) France

By Emily Day

Tournament favourites Afghanistan narrowly defeated France 4-3 today in a fast-paced match largely controlled by Afghanistan but punctuated by bursts of French genius.

The growing continent of Afghani fans chanting "AFG" were rewarded for their support by an early goal courtesy of Jawad Zahid.

A roll-in from the corner straight to the waiting feet of the unruffled Mustafa saw him pelt it into the right corner of the net to bring the score to 2-0.

An unmarked French player took advantage of his brief freedom to net France's first goal.

But Afghanistan responded straight away with Masih bringing the score to 3-1.

One more goal for each team went in before the half time whistle, bringing the score to 4-2 in Afghanistan's favour.

The second half saw a cautious start from both teams, with France's stronger defence making it harder for Afghanistan to break through.

Afghanistan pelted the goal with a barrage of shots which rained wide.

A penalty to France took care of the next goal, with the French forward taking a cool and calm strike which found the left corner of the net.

But the evenly matched defence meant that no more goals went through, with the final whistling signalling a 4-3 win for Afghanistan.
